Its alright OD, me auld mate - I'm come across plenty like Big Ron over the years, and will most probably do so again.

To answer your question directly Big Ron - I did not believe your request was addressed to me personally, hence I did not response to a question for which i did not have the answer.

HOWEVER, if you take the time to look the ship up on my web site, rather than wait for an answer to be hand fed to you, you will see that I do in fact touch upon that day, albeit not in the detail you seem to crave.

Perhaps if you pose your question on the discussion page of Duke of Lancastrer .net you will get an answer - that seems to be run by like-minded folk.

I will sign off with an apology for not being there 'on the day' to take a photograph.  As a nine year old at the time such travel could be difficult.

Hi there haywoodbadman! Thanks for the great pics. I lived within walking distance of the ship for a few years - interesting to see its present condition. The owners should be required to scrap it before it becomes nothing more than a dangerous eyesore. Nobody will pay to have it restored - too expensive...

I recognise some of the photos in this tribute from my site - and know that permission to reproduce has not been sought or obtained as they were provided exclusively to me by the respective photographers....  Huh

Yeah Cambs, a couple of them were the ones I shot and sent to you! They didn't go anywhere else!

There is a list of credits at the end of the video but I didn't notice one for you!

I'm all for promoting the situation of the Duke but I think they should have contacted you first!

You and a few others Nooks, showing ship in Sealink colours - not happy.  I wonder if the others mentioned at the end actually gave their permission?   Angry

Nothing can be done without the owners permission and apparently they are not intrested in doing anything. Could they have an arteria motive!

Well the ship is at a real balancing point now, the hull is rottern as after all these years of being dry docked next to salt water. the clothing company that owns her is actually still intrested in doing something with her, they even applied for planning permision for a new access road but it was denied. (got all this info from my mate who phoned the company up xD)

How do you know the hull is rotten? Ships spend all the time in salt water. That's what their built for. Why would the owners still be intrested in the ship?  Huh

Well yeah but that one's been there for 20 years unmaintained, you cant get to the hull because its in concrete. A friend i knew contacted the company thats how he found out they are still intrested.

Its been there for 29 years. Its not concreted in and if they where even slightly intrested they would have at least done a minimum amount of maintenance. Let face it. Its abandoned.   Roll Eyes

2/3rds of the hull is stuck in concrete, if it wasnt stuck there i'm sure she'd have been moved and put somewhere else but she's landlocked, to dig her out now would cost alot of money, then you have to repair the hull to try and get her to float again.

The ships obviously abandoned. Maybe someone should go along and claim salvage rights. Might prove intresting! Cool

Google says:

A "derelict" is a vessel that has been left by its crew that has no intention to return and no hope of recovery. However, even when a vessel is "abandoned" and left without intention to return, the vessel remains the property of its owner absent some affirmative act by the owner that clearly and convincingly establishes a positive intent to part with ownership.

But it would be interesting to try.  Would it be worth the money it would cost though?

I thought salvage rights only applied when a vessel is abandoned and drifting on the high sea?

find such a vessel and tow it to safety then you have salvage rights equal to the value of the vessel

My understanding is that if the ship is abandoned she would eventually be the property of the Crown if no one else claimed it Cool

Yea on land probably, but salvage rights wont apply unless the vessel is drifting and abandoned on the sea no?

Yes she is abandoned but the people who own her still want to try to do something, its the council that wont let them. the company has always tried to apply for permision to do various things with her.
