I've heard a whisper that the old Duke of Lancaster along the coast at Llanerch-y-Mor has been sold for to a Queensferry scrap dealer for breaking up.  The rumour is that she could be broken up by Christmas. Can anyone do a little detective work? |

Cant believe the Duke of Lancaster still exists, certainly? rings a bell, I think I worked on her, probably? summers of 1974/1975? ?
I was also on Cambria/Hibernia (last voyages then)? and a couple of other temps,? then St Colomba.
Weren't? there? 3 Dukes, another was? Rothesay. And? one became a night club on the Tyne?
Cant believe any one of them? has? lasted this long.
I guess there's many a CG.commer worked on those ships!

My dad worked on the one by Mostyn Market there. He keeps telling me every time we pass. It looks in a right state now. Shame yeah!

remember all three Duke boats at Holyhead for years ,annual dry dock ,and they use to do crusie 's off Scotland ,but they are getting on,I have seen the one at Mostyn dock ,but gee its a sad site,but as the saying goes time waits for nothing ,especilly old ships and sea dogs

Bob, don't you look at my web site? You'll find the answers there!   Duke of Argyll - last until the 90's when she was burnt out off Hong Kong. Duke of Rothesay - scrapped 1975 Duke of Lancaster - on the beach near Mostyn. In relation to the Tyne night club, both the Dover and the Caledonian Princess have filled that role at Gateshead. The latter is still in business there when the former is out of use at Hartlepool. Weren't? there? 3 Dukes, another was? Rothesay. And? one became a night club on the Tyne?

I agree OD!
I didn't say I was for or against trying to do something with what's left of the ship, I just know her as a landmark, so having seen the new website, I just thought I would mention it here in case anybody else was interested.
Personally, If I had wanted a ship to be saved I think it would have been the old "Canberra". If they can melt her down (which they did) then they will melt any of them down. I also recall a massive campain to save the "Windsor Castle" and that came to nought.
Well, times must move on but I will commend the guys involved with this new project for having a go!

Hmmm, yes some of these people have contacted me and don't seem too pleased when I offer my opinion, which mirroes that of OD's. Ho hum! If they want to have a go at preservation, at least the old Dover is afloat and looking for a new owner over in Hartlepool!

Absolutely1 Interesting that her designers hated converting her to a car ferry and consider that they ruined her looks forever. I don't agree with that view myself! Take it then you like the shot of her currently the home page pic over on mine! I'll be placing another shot of her on the home page next week. As you know J I dislike ferries - but one that springs to mind that was a beautriful looking ship was the 'Avalon'. Now she would have been worth saving!

Interesting thought I've just had! As we know DoL is sat on sand, presumably with her bilge tanks full of water. a nice recipe for rust creation, I would have thought.
However, both the ex Dover and ex Caledonian princess have both been afloat for the last 20 odd years with - as far as I know - little or no dry docking in that time. Not sure as to the tidal limits at Hartlepool or Gateshead, but presumably they also get their fair share of salt solution.
OK, DoL has 5 years older than the Caledonian, and 9 than the Dover but from what I read, no-body really knows as to the state of her underneath. If the tanks were filled with fresh water and the sand came from inland sources she may surprisingly be alright under there!
As I say I'm neither pro or anti saving the Duke, I'm just offering up a point for debate.

The steam tug Canning formerly owned by Alexander Towing at Liverpool then Swansea, has been at Swansea under the so called care of the Maritime Museum, it could be availabe for preservation if anyone would like to get involved in preservation.

Hi Nooks!
The former Dover and Caledonian Princess have only been drydocked once since becoming floating nightclubs. Given that when I visited the latter in 2005 my feet were sticking to the carpet, i don't hold out much hope for the technical upkeep!
As for the Duke, when she was sold the current owners asked one of her Holyhead officers if he would 'drive' her on her final passage up onto the beach. Sealink suggested he declined as, in their eyes, it was a disaster waiting to happen. Instead she was pushed up by tugs at high water. Initially she was aflloat, but the owners then surrounded her with stone, thereby creating something of a damn around her. I don't believe she is actually encased in concrete, but she may as well be.
