Well my friends, since I am on a punfast until Boxing Day, I thought I would post a fairly serious subject. Incidentally if any of you want to show your appreciation for the 11 day punfast currently taking place then please make your donations to the Splash For Cash Fund...  Wink

A few days ago a good friend of mine, aged 42, suffered a stroke which left him with an inability to move his left arm and leg. The hospital did a load of tests on him and also found that his cholestrol levels were really high so they have told him to cut out pork, beef, cheese full fat milk etc.

This has reminded me of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. After suffering a slipped disc on 22nd September I am finally back on form in the local gym and beginning to feel fitter again. However I noticed that the gym is almost deserted nowadays !. I told the manager that they would probably get a big influx of new members in January after all that self indulgence !.

What are you doing to keep yourself fit and healthy ?.

I wonder if the credit crunch has anything to do with people not going to the gym?  nobody has the money these days to spend on luxuries I suppose.

I too have been to the gym quite a lot, also. When not falling into ditches and breaking bones, bashing my head in etc, I like to walk around our fantastic coastline a lot too...

I don't know about Pirates classes, all that walking around going 'arrrrr' how is that good for you?

I havent used my treadmill since before I went to NZ in October, my excuse was that the room it was in was being decorated. It is time to dust it off and get going again. On top of that my employer has given me a free pass to have 10 swimming sessions so theres that option too.

Sorry to hear about your mate and hope that they can get some mobility back in due time.

I like to keep fit and trim and go to circuit training twice a week, swimming training on Saturdays for 1.5hrs, run 12 miles on a Sunday and 10 miles on a Wednesday.

I am taking it easy this week and doing the above because I am racing on Sunday in a 10K.

Recently I have been doing the above with an added 5 miles on Mondays and Thursdays, and seven miles on Tuesdays and Fridays.  I will step back up to this after Christmas but soon upping the milage on Sundays to make that a longer run but cutting back on Tuesdays and Fridays.  The millage will be roughly the same but the longer run on Sundays will be in preparation for a marathon in April.

Cycling is good as well but I only go out on my racer when it is perfect weather, there is no fun in cycling in all weathers and I would really like a home trainer if anyone has a dusty one they don't want any more.

Next year I have about 25 races planned with about three or four triathlons.

I walk the dog for about an half to an hour every day to relax.

I have been taking pilates classes 3 mornings a week for a few weeks and try to run/walk a few miles on the off days. I seemed to have gained 10lbs in the last year.  Angry So gonna work it off. Apparently it means less beer though so I may have to learn to love my love handles.

Does love handles mean something naughty?

You need to watch what you are eating then and have six smaller meals a day rather than three big ones.  Find out exactly what your heart rate needs to be to burn fat and don't go above that level.  It is usualy quite slow and I find it hard to run at that pace.  The basic way to calculate this is to take 220 and subtract your age.  Take this number and then calculate 60% and 70%.  After a warm up, run with your heart rate no lower than the bottom number and no higher than the top number for at least half an hour three times a week.  That should, with a bit of a cleaner diet and your pilates see a few pounds drop off.  But, looking at your pics, you gorra be kiddin mama!

Love handles are the flabby bits around your waist that are used as handles to hold on to when what women call 'love making'.

Like bingo wings, the flabby bits under the arms that wobble when you win at bingo and shout house whilst waving your bingo card.

Cheers Rascal, my mate is in rehab and getting daily physio and is making very slow progress but he is in good spirits.

Wow I must say I am impressed with your routine !. I take it you wear only the best footwear to minimise excess wear in your knees and spine ?.

Good advice Rasc. If I am trying to lose weight then, with the exception of carbing up for a pre-workout boost, I usually reduce my carbohydrate intake (also eating little or no carbs within 4 hours of bedtime) and increase my cardio / aerobic activity. At present I am hovering around the 14 stone mark which I feel is about right for my 5 foot 11 mesomorphic frame but if I gain a lot over Christmas I may have to take steps to burn some extra fat off !.

I've heard that Heathrow Airport is a great place to loose baggage but not to use love handles.
