A Packard Bell running Vista Home Premium. When switched on it shows the 'switch user' login instead of the usual login. When the password is entered I get "The user profile Service service failed the logon. user profile cannot be loaded."

Any ideas???

I don't do Windows anymore (except at work) and have never used a machine running vista.  However, if you have an administrator account, I think the following could be of use: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/130095-user-profile-service-failed-logon-user-profile-cannot-loaded.html
That seems like a decent help forum that should be able to help, if no-one here comes up with a better solution.

Crikey, dunno with Vista. What Cod said about the admin acc and reinstall/repair - or possibly onstart-up, run your installation disk over the present prog to repair any files deleted. Can you get into the Safe Mode? (Is it f8 or 9) see if your profile is still in there and if so, set your pc back to the last working config ??

Thanks, managed to get to system restore during start-up. Seems to be working now. Wish I still had XP...
