Internet with no landline?

is it possible to get internet connection in Holyhead without having a landline installed?

I am asking as friends of mine want to get online but are happy with their mobile phones and do not want a landline connected.

Is there good enough 3g or 3.5g connection speeds to connect with a dongle? Last time I enquired with vodafone about this the rep asked where I lived and when I said Holyhead he said don't waste your time cos the connection speed is crap and it had not been upgraded to 3.5g yet?

Aye, I have problems even getting a moble connection in many parts of the island!

 - except when I stand at the end of the road at South Stack! The familiar 'Beep beep' tells me I have an incoming text message, which reads "Welcome to O2 roaming, Ireland" followed by another one, saying "You have just been charged £X.XX for relaying the previous message!"

I know a few people who use 3g it's got a great speed and coverage is almost 100% however vodafone is a dail up connection.

I know a few people in Holyhead who access the net using a dongle.  Never heard them complain about it.  I don't know if location has anything to do with it but they are in the Kingsland, Tan y Refail, Treseifion vicinity.

Which mobile company do they use Shell?

I think it would depend where you live as it's a wireless signal similar to a mobile phone, so if you live in a bad signal area you could be struggling, I think Kingsland is quite a good area because they have wifi in McDonalds and Travelodge so it's what they call a wifi hotspot

Cheers plasroad, my friend lives in the kingsland area but he's not looking for a wi-fi hotspot, just his own internet broadband using a dongle from a mobile phone company. I have found one that looks interesting here:

This network reportedly gives very good connection for most of Holyhead according to their coverage map. I think 5gig/month download limit would suit him ok.

I am helping him to shop around and trying to get advice on the best deal, hopefully somebody uses a similar connection in town and can give more advice?

A great advantage of a dongle is that you can carry it in your pocket and get online from any pc/laptop you use.

however I would recommend that you ask your friend to find out if other people in the area are using it as there seems to be a problem round here with different networks, I know someone living on TBay road, she's on voda and doesn't get a signal he's on o2 and is fine, Orange seems to work best in Llaingoch whereby o2 was good at one time but doesn't seem to be anymore. I don't know much about "3" but I wouldn't trust the site where it says there is coverage better to ask a real person.
A friend of mine recently went to buy a laptop it was so called "free" so long as you took the mobile dongle on contract, they told her in the shop that where she lived she would have no problem with coverage as it was on the map, however when she told them that her mobile (same provider) had poor coverage in the area they changed their minds and told her it would most probably not work

No not yet, he says he will hang on till i'm home next to help him sort it out - but if i can find a good offer i may be able to persuade him to give it a go.

I think you're looking at the wrong product there that offer is for a fixed product through your telephone line, also it's not available here as to get that o2 have to have their own kit in the exchange, all we can get here is o2 access at I think about £17 a month which is dire, it's a really poor product I did have it but got rid as the speeds and surfing were impossible come 5pm as it's oversubscribed.
