Title: I got a Mouse!
Post by: Nooks on Sunday 09 February 2014, 2336
Heard a funny rattling noise from the ceiling a week ago, thinking it was just something in the loft being affected by draughts from the recent windy weather, I ignored it. However, it started up again this afternoon, so I went up to have a look. Telltale deposits led me to believe I wasn't alone so, being a bear of gadgetry, set up my infra red camera and connected it up to the telly.

Got some letter writing done this evening whilst being entertained by - - - I think I'll call him Eric. He seems to be by himself up there but what do you all think the best course of action should be now?

He won;t be alone for long. Then you'll have an infestation and everytime we see you we'll have to sing Michael Jackson's "Ben" to you.
So dispose of him in as humane a way as possible. Cos the singing won;t be nothing near humane no.

Noooks, the two of you need look no more...

Mab, you sound just like that bird off the "Blurred Lines" video.

Interesting point though, until recently the adjoining neighbour had a cat, and we had no trouble for years.

We've got a couple of those rodent-sonar-repellent things in the attic.  They seemed to work at first, but I've been hearing scurrying in the roof at various times over the past winter.

But there are two or three cats in the neighbourhood, and I think their presence helps.

Pity Tecsyn's been quiet recently, I'm sure he would have a solution - but then again, I would like to retain my roof tiles.

I've ordered a live trap pethna from Amazon, I'll see how that goes.

I'm with Reenie on this.

He could find a friend and soon have more offspring than you can cope with.

Using cheese as bait is useless. Apparently.

Using cheese as bait is useless. Apparently.

I've heard that as well. Anyway, I refuse to have it in the house. Devils food!

I could try one of Llainy's tomatoes.

Perhaps chips. Who can resist nicking a chip?

They visit my drafty ramshackle stone shed every winter and I buy the little darlings some special food from the local farmers warehouse, they scatter it about a bit, hide some here and there and then just go off their food.

The damage they do can be extensive, chewing stuff and leaving their deposits all over the place. >:(

Mouse trap arrived this morning. It's got like a swing door and traps them alive so I've just got to set it up there with some bait. Googled to find the best stuff to use and got some advice from this forum http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=504856

Sounds like Nanon's Peanut butter could work well, unfortunately haven't got any - already eaten by 23 year old 6ft 2 legged mouse. No chocolate either. For now, I'll try a bit of potato, tomato and apple sauce. Might as well give Eric a balanced meal if it's his last - although I'm intending on freeing him like the poll suggests.

Actually, when I looked, I didn't have any apple sauce, so I've tried barbeque instead. Thought Eric may be able to smell that easily.  I've got the camera running now, but no action so far, he's been quiet today.

A quick update: Eric has a friend! Earlier this evening I watched them both crawl all over the mouse house trying to suss out what it was, but at no time did either of them seem to be drawn to the entrance. Later on I had a look in the cupboard to see what else I could try. I found some chocolate ice cream topping, so I put  a trace along the entrance tunnel and a splodge next to the barbecue sauce inside. An hour later, Bingo! Eric (or Ernie) safely in the house and the other one sniffing around, although I think the second one's a bit dubious now. hopefully he will succumb overnight then I can release them together tomorrow morning.

Supposing one of them is actually an Erica, or an Ernestine?  Is there a possibility they might have left lots of little Ericas or Ernests behind?
Title: Re: I got a Mouse!
Post by: Nooks on Thursday 13 February 2014, 1126
Yes, quite possibly! Eric has been set free this morning and is now frolicking around a football training field miles from anywhere. He looks like a young adolescent so quite probably they've set up home together. Unfortunately it's a bit difficult trying to sex a mouse when they're running around, you need to get hold and I didn't want to open the trap before time or he may get away. Anyway, it's reset and ready for Ernie now.

In the meantime I've been around the outside of the building and there are a couple of possibilities as to how they got in so I'm going to deal with that today.

Title: Re: I got a Mouse!
Post by: Nooks on Friday 14 February 2014, 1914
Everything's been quiet since yesterday's release. the trap was reset as stated but there has been no indication of any movement from upstairs - much, much quieter than a mouse, in fact! I also have blocked the possible entry holes to the house so am wondering: Could Ernie have been outside the building when I did that, and now can't get back in? or is he just missing his mate and staying in the nest cacking himself? (should've got in the box with Eric, daft thing). Once a mouse sets himself up as tenant in a building do they tend to stay there or do they regularly come and go? They will have to find a drink of course but being in the loft they could easily get through to the gutters for that.

I've planned to start cleaning through the loft tomorrow so we will see what turns up.

Definitely another mouse up there - and it's a crafty one. I've re-baited the trap several times, but it won't go in. Last night I purposely left a bit of food outside as well. It's gone this morning. I really hope it sees sense and allows itself to be caught, otherwise I will have to resort to more fatal methods. <<cocking gun emoticon>>

Well, they're a bit big for the mouse trap!

Sloths in the loft would be quite cool! there's lots of timber up there for them to hang from and cleaning up after them will be easy if they can all use the toilet as was commented on in the article.

Might be a problem when the g/f visits though, she's a meerkat fan. Not sure how Alexsander and Sergei will get on with sloths.

We used to get mice now and again in our house in Maes y Mor probably from Bolsarch, I have never been afraid of them I think they are cute

It's not a case of being afraid of them, Lizzie.

In my case, they get in the attic and/or the garage, and cause no end of noise, smells and damage.

I wish they could all be like the mouse on your cake!

One morning many years ago, when staying at a friend's house while she was away, I went downstairs, opened the sitting room door, and discovered my friend's cat parading very proudly on the carpet around a large, freshly killed rat ...

I had to dispose of the corpse (I picked it up with a plastic bag) before I could even have a cup of coffee ...

Oh well, it was peaceful whilst it lasted!

Started hearing the scratching sounds in the loft a week or two before Christmas, so set up the mouse catching box again that arrested Eric and Ernie a couple of years back. No takers, the scratching continued (and got louder), the mint jelly (worked before) untouched.

Decided to put a camera up there so I could see what was happening, and yesterday I got a sighting! The reason the trap wasn't working was because it isn't a mouse, it's a blydi great rat!

So, ordered a bigger cage off Amazon today. Hopefully Julie (I'll leave you to guess the reason for the name) will be in custody in a few days time.

When I was young I used to help out on a farm. I witnessed the sheepdog taking care of a rat that had found its way into the chicken sheds. It didn't last very long!

Unfortunately, the corners of my loft are a bit too small for a sheepdog. I did think of borrowing the girlfriend's cat, but the dozy thing is so soft and useless that it will probably poo itself if it meets a rodent.

Heard more scratching tonight. The live cage has been set up for the last couple of days, but no takers. I'm afraid its time for the big guns. However that may leave me with a large hole in my roof and a carefully worded explanation to the police, so it'll have to be the snap traps instead.

Sometimes even the smell of a cat is enough to frighten rodents away.  How about getting something that the cat's been sleeping on, and putting it in the attic?  After all, the rats don't know about this particular cat's pusillanimity.

Last night on my CCTV, I watched the little basdud walk between the cage and the snap trap to collect a couple of bits of rabbit food I had left loose on the floor. She completely ignored the bait (same stuff) in the traps. Who told her eh?

My thoughts also!

If that turns out to be the case, I have a plan 'C' in mind. Apparently the most humane way of despatch, and the way the pros do it (for things like snakes and birds-of-prey feed etc). is to gas them with CO2. I'm told its totally painless, it literally puts them to sleep.

So, letting go with my welding bottle into the eaves of the loft may be worth trying.

Problem is, will it do the same for bears?

10 minutes later, noise from the loft. Turned on the CCTV to see Julie munching on said bait. She then went to the side of the cage and sniffed the rest of the bait inside, but didn't bother to look for the entrance. She's either very clever or very dozy!

No he didn't agree with the television, drinking, smoking or spying on whelks through a bush with a non-functional cat. As such, the actions of his pet rat made no difference, and it died of old age in 1973. The funeral was very grand, and ironically uncle Penrhos watched it on his new telly.

Was it hard to get through the wall and was that just an excuse to use the luxury mansion's luxury pool?

Not hard at all - it just slid through a crevice, despite the big stones that I'd tried to block it off with.

The luxury mansion doesn't have a luxury pool, so Ratty and his friends can't enjoy surreptitious dips along with the champagne and canapés ...

Simple and elegant solution - paint the likeness of a nude rat on the fence with a hole where the head should go. When rat tries to come through the next time, just take a photo as he pops his head through so it looks like the rat is nude.

Proceed to demand that the rat never returns, or you will publish the pictures on micespace.

In real life: I persuaded Round-the-Corner's (expensive pedigree) cat to do a sort of tour of the garage and garden.  It finished by throwing up near the oil tank ...  I was convinced that all right-thinking rodents would be terrified by the smell, and not come near the place.

So imagine my disillusion a couple of hours later when Ratty, looking exceptionally smug and fat, was discovered drinking out of the birds' water dish ...

I don't think smells particularly bother them Jean. The place where I found my rodents were getting in was about a metre from a cats toilet. Of course nothing can smell stronger than the sewers, and apparently rats seem to like it in there.

Still no more sightings, by the way. I think I may be rat-free!

You're very fortunate, Nooks.

I heard scrabbling in the attic a couple of nights ago.  They shouldn't be in the attic at this time of the year: they're meant to be outside, sunbathing and enjoying themselves ...

I wouldn't know about the rats where you live, but we have a better class of rat here, and they wouldn't do what you're suggesting ...

Some rats are highly intelligent and like to play word games where they will get some peace.

Knew it was too good to last!

Went into the loft today to get something and noticed that the chum had gone. A quick review of the CCTV showed that Julie appeared at 01:27 on 15th April for an Easter nosh-up whilst I was away visiting Caergybi.

I found a dead mouse in the bottom of the watering can in the garage this morning ... I felt very sorry for it, but I also felt quite sorry for me, having to deal with it.

Anyway, this is the latest mouse repellent idea ... (http://how-to-get-rid-of-mice.com/peppermint-oil/)

Tree climbing goats and self-consuming brains?

The New Scientist seems to be going down hill rapidly.

They must have discovered gravity. Somebody was going to, sooner or later.

I'm reading an amazing book on anti - gravity at the moment - I can't put it down

Meanwhile ... our blessed rat has completely taken up residence, and frisks to and fro in the herbaceous borders in the back garden, completely ignoring the two bait boxes purchased at vast expense earlier in the year ...

What I need is someone with a dog that's keen on ratting ...

(Yes ... thank you for that, Nooks ... )

I suspect that there are at least two of them living in our back garden.  I'm led to believe that terriers are very good at chasing rats ...  So I'm wondering if I can strike up acquaintance with a terrier anxious to demonstrate his rat-chasing skills ...  (You'd think there'd be loads in the country: I can't think of one in this neighbourhoold ... )

Ideally a Jack Russel but I have seen a Labrador get one from under a car and shake it to bits (not the car)

My rat Julie has been AWOL for some weeks now.

Perhaps she's gone visiting at Jean's. (She is a bit faddy with her food Jean, and don't leave it on any sort of trap or she will not eat it, then it goes to waste).

Yesterday I pulled a mummified rat carcass from under the floorboards at my sisters house. It appeared to be dead.

Not really. I was actually looking for mummified elephant carcasses but there weren't any. That elephant repellant powder she keeps buying must be good stuff!

I suppose I could stand in the middle of the garden hurling plaster of paris statues at fleeing rats ...

Apparently, though, plaster of paris is not good for the digestive systems of rats (or of anyone else for that matter).  But, cunning though they are, they don't realise that: especially if the p of p is mixed up with sugar, flour, etc., and then left in suitable places.

So I await the arrival of the p of p, and we shall see what we shall see ...
