Coming soon to Holyhead / Re: Masrket Hall - Open Doors Friday 29 September 2017

The tour closed with a demonstration by very friendly and very skilled craftsmen of first the cutting and fixing of slates and then carving sandstone to a profile for items like the capstone and pillar shown earlier, then carving lettering into sandstone.  Members of the public were then invited to have a go at these traditional skills, which was a lot harder than these gentlemen made it look.

Really enjoyable and I'm certainly going to the next one.  So many memories.

I can't wait to see the finished item!

Fireplace - again somewhere near 1001 antiques stall.  Latterly I think water came in heavily at this end of the Hall

The roof had held up surprisingly well considering it had not been maintained for decades.  The original timbers [cedar wood no less] are to be seen here they are the whitewashed ones, the new replacement timbers are self colour.  You can see how well the original materials have lasted from this picture

The builders are making every effort to preserve as much of the original fabric of the building as possible.  For example the flagstones from the rear of the Hall have been recycled and will be used to consolidate the flagstones to the entrance area.  They were a good 25mm minimum thick.  This is the bottom of the handrail to the stairs.

Here we see the top of one of the pillars supporting the trusses, the roof is massive.

The slates are from Penrhyn as the original and they come in three thicknesses, with the heaviest at the bottom and the lightest at the top.  The slates will be fixed with visible copper nails at the bottom and galvanised [hidden] ones at the top
