are we too lazy to even prepare our own food now?
« on: Sunday 21 March 2010, 2039 »
Sales of lazy foods such as peeled potatoes, chopped carrots and diced onions are on the rise. But is there anything wrong with us taking a culinary shortcut? ??? ;D

It just doesn't taste the same, probably been in it's plastic bag for ages before it gets on your plate, you can't beat fresh and most of the time it works out more economical.

A shop bought loaf of bread is also pre-prepard food.

Producers of cake mix in the 1950s found that having the purchaser ["housewife"] add an egg themselves during the cooking process  increased sale no end. Clearly some convenience foods can be too convenient.  ;D

We've been in the 'prepared food' game ever since we stopped being hunter-gatherers.   Did we invent home freezers because of Fish Fingers or did we invent Fish Fingers because of home freezers.

Guilty i'm afraid.  I don't always, but find it convenient when mixed in a pre-packed bag with other veg.  I'd say I only ever prepare a meal from scratch (as it were) about once a week.  I am only cooking for myself, but find time is at a premum seeing as I work.  It's about 7 at night when I sit down to eat and it would be considerably later if I were cooking from scratch.

Yes.
Women these days have it too easy with these new things that are pre-peeled, chopped or diced or something.
No wonder they can sit around all day watching Jeremy Kyles and This Morning and Loose Women whilst drinking tea and scoffing chocolate.

Any ladies wishing to bash me will have to look under the table, as that's where I'm hiding for the rest of the day.

Prepare our own food?  We were lucky to have any food prepared or otherwise on The Mountain when I was a boy.  They don't know they're born these days no.

During the winter, I buy pre bagged lettuces (usually rucola, field salad or curly kale) because I'm the only one who eats it. To buy a whole one means wastage as it goes off before I can demolish it.
Sometimes, on the way to work in the morning. I occasionally buy bags of pre-peeled veggies (sugar snaps, carrots, French beans) to have for lunch.
I have bought pre-peeled spuds when leaving work at 6pm, because I can't be bothered to peel spuds for dinner and that option is a lot healthier for my son's meal than say, heating up a frozen pizza. I suppose it's all a question of lifestyle. Mostly after work I will cook properly but when I'm off on Thurs and Friday's we always have a meal from scratch.
