Cheap Runabout Wanted: Holyhead Area
« on: Friday 16 March 2012, 0700 »
My trusty reliable Nissan has failed it's MOT and I have decided that it is not worth spending hundreds of pounds on it due to it's current value.

I am therefore looking for a reliable economical family sized car that will cost me less than a grand.

If anybody can provide me with information which will lead to a successful purchase then I will stop punning for three months.

Thanks all.

 :)

I think Autotrader is always worth a look

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/used-cars

Will it need any special modifications, like wings or sand wheels?

and, perhaps, a horn!

Try the chronicle, there's usually an advert for a place in Llangefni, I think it's H.A & O cars and boats, he usually has some good deals. I got my run around from there, i've had it 4yrs now- 400 I'd certainly go there again.

Hey thanks very much for the comments. Reenie the Peugeot looked nice but for a family of five with adult sized kids it's a bit small.

Nooks I've got the Autotrader and have noted that the best deals seem to emanate from the Manchester area, I just want to try and get a good deal locally first as it's a long drive. As for extras I would mind a canned laughter button so I can at least pretend someone in the car is laughing when I tell a joke.

JM, I've just checked HAO and they have an old VW Passat that might be worth a look, thanks.

It's worth giving it a go on-line as you can set a load of filters up to find what you want: distance to look, Fuel type, engine size etc. etc.. Follow my link, stick your postcosde in the box top left and then click 'more options' and then check or uncheck your desirables. It can easily narrow it down to a few cars in your area.

It's a pity you need a large car, otherwise you could always invest in a punto!

Well I just shot out to Llangefni to take a look at the cars at HAO, I tried to follow the little map on the advert to find the place but could not find it !. I was Hunting All Over for it whilst dying for a pee. I stopped and phoned their two phone numbers, one landline and one mobile, no reply !. So I gave up, drove back to Holyhead to check out Lloyds Cars (behind TJ's). It was shuttered up and no sign of anyone. It seems local car dealers are not desperate to sell their cars at all !. Nooks I will be coming to Manchester to get one by the looks of it. I did see a 1.8 litre Punto on Autotrader and looked at the performance figures , wow ! it's fast.

do they still have car auctions in whitchurch?

http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/local/car-auctions/ai_47705.php

or a different location maybe?

http://www.autoinsider.co.uk/uk_auctions.php

this is where most dealers get their stock of used cars for sale from.

Baz, in llangefni take the turning for pencraig, there is a shop on the right called strawberry basket or strawberry fields, opposite the shop there is a road to the left, it is the first turning there. H&O cars, and a small garage etc.

Thanks Che and Justme... if I'm over that way in the coming days I will check it out.  ;)

At the moment I'm hoping to get a 2000/2001 VW Passat or Skoda Octavia Estate 1.8 or TDi (same engine).. if necessary I might up my budget a little.

Thanks for all the input everybody. I tried local dealers but they were just too expensive so I used Auto Trader to acquire a Vauxhall Vectra (diesel). I got it for quite a good price but I am a bit worried about some bad reviews I've read on the car in relation to fuel pump failures costing over a grand to fix !... uh oh... heres hoping and praying it will be a good car.

Ignore Jeremy Clarkson Baz, Vectras are good cars! My Vectra was the best car I ever had. It's still going and has almost 200K on the clock.

Best car I ever had was a Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6i 5-door back in the mid-90's.     I was based in Germany and bought it just before we came back to UK under the tax, duty and VAT free scheme we had.  It had to go on rollers to clock 1080 miles on the clock before it could be brought into the UK and I wasn't allowed to sell it for 3 years.   It was lethal - could leave an Escort RS Turbo or XR3i for dead.   Would bang out 120mph (not that I ever tried  ;) ) .

Blaupunkt stereo,  electric sunroof and windows (hi-spec back then). Beautiful car to drive.  Especially fast.

Thanks for the encouragement Nooks, I appreciate it. I went over budget on the car so I felt a little uneasy when I went online and saw those bad reviews. There must be hundreds of thousands of diesel Vectras around so hopefully mine is a good one. It has a full service history although it has clocked 112,000 miles.

I <briefly> had a 1978 Mitsubishi Colt Lancer 1.4 back in 1991. After a few days it started misfiring. I changed some of the ignition leads and spark plugs but still no joy. In those days I had a terrible temper and I got so annoyed with the car I kicked the drivers door in leaving a massive dent. My brother (not Tec) turned up and I screamed at him "if you can fix this car you can have it !". He calmly lifted the bonnet, noticed a loose connection on the distributor (that I had obviously missed) and pushed it firmly back on. He turned the key and the engine roared into life !. He took me at my word and waved goodbye as he drove the car away.

My best ever car was a 1985 Vauxhall Cavalier Sri. It looked stunning, had an amazing sound system, was very nippy and had good fuel economy. The only problem was that I had a bank loan to get the car and got sick and tired of the repayments so I sold it and got that Mitsubishi !. I still think about that Sri today, it was a lovely car.

Parts are comparatively cheap as well - especially if you use motor factor outlets rather than main dealers. Much of the electronics on the vehicles are of 'Bosch' origin. Andrew Page Ltd are Bosch main stockists so have the dealers spec goods on the shelf at a much cheaper price. Unfortunately the nearst one to Caergybi is Ellesmere Port but they do operate a mail order service.

(they will also probably keep Baz's fuel pump in stock n'all)

Thanks very much TC and Nooks, I'm hoping I never need that fuel pump but thanks for the tip.... I see parts are available on e-bay too.
