Oh well, it was peaceful whilst it lasted!

Started hearing the scratching sounds in the loft a week or two before Christmas, so set up the mouse catching box again that arrested Eric and Ernie a couple of years back. No takers, the scratching continued (and got louder), the mint jelly (worked before) untouched.

Decided to put a camera up there so I could see what was happening, and yesterday I got a sighting! The reason the trap wasn't working was because it isn't a mouse, it's a blydi great rat!

So, ordered a bigger cage off Amazon today. Hopefully Julie (I'll leave you to guess the reason for the name) will be in custody in a few days time.

For added effect why not connect the cage to the neutral and, keeping the bait off the cage, connect the bait to live = ZAP !

I did consider an electrocution pod they had on Amazon, but i'm a live and let live type of guy, so I'll have a go at catching it unharmed first.

Trap arrived yesterday so I set it up last night. Nothing yet but I think he/she must've been out visiting. I haven't heard any scratching for a couple of nights.

We've been having similar problems once again.

I've bought a couple of rat bait boxes and put them in the garden.  The last time I checked, there had been a bit of nibbling of the bait (looks like carbolic), but no corpses anywhere ...

Still no action. it's gone very quiet up there. I'm also wondering if rats tend to have a different pallete than mice, who go for sweet stuff. So far i've tried mint sauce and bits of tomato. Tonights menu is Mango Chutney.

I don't know, Nooks ...

Why don't you find an obliging rat, and ask it if it wouldn't mind taking part in some market research?

Yesterday afternoon I watched on camera, my rat Julie, blatantly ignore the cage and bait and walked right past the entrance.

No consideration for all my hard work.

I've just re-baited it with some dried rabbit food (I don't mean salad, gf actually has a rabbit) so we'll see how that does. The stuff certainly stinks!

Oh by the way, Julie has a live in boyfriend as well, dirty girl! Seen both of them!

Some rather depressing links on rats in attics -

http://www.attic-rat.com/
http://www.aaanimalcontrol.com/professional-trapper/ratattic.html
http://myhousepests.com/rats/kill-roof-rats.html

This is good -
How Do You Get Rats Out of the Attic? - The best tool is education.
You can imagine rats being kept out of people's attics with enticing offers of classes on philosophy, quantum mechanics, string theory, etc.

Interesting reading Jean. Thanks!

Well, I'm not getting anywhere with the live cage trap. They've had their chance now, and a couple of the snap traps are now on order.

I'm not getting anywhere with the rat bait boxes.

The carbolic-stuff has been nibbled, but there's a complete lack of corpses - and there's scuffling going on in the attic ...

Poundland mice said to be responsible for:

... a partially-eaten Easter egg [and] chocolate Father Christmas figures, including one with part of its head nibbled through ...

(Were the Father Christmases carrying Easter eggs ... ?)

I always thought Poundland was a porn site.  :o

I have been chum baiting an area of the loft with the rabbit food, which Julie and co. have been getting to trust. The snap traps have not yet arrived but I'm hoping for success when they do.
