Another Autumn Menace !
« on: Wednesday 02 September 2015, 1738 »
I was sat in my van at lunchtime today enjoying my duck egg & mayo sandwiches. In my open sandwich box was also an orange and a banana.

My window was down just an inch or so. Suddenly I became aware of something buzzing by my right ear. I turned to discover that a pesky WASP had flown through the gap in my window into my van and, pardon the pun, made a beeline for my sandwich box.

I opened my door and got rid of it and then had to spend the next few minutes eating my lunch with the windows up - so I was hot !.

These little blighters do get on my nerves at this time of the year. I know their food source is running out and they are after sweet things but they will sting you mercilessly for no reason at all.

If a wasp gets too close to me I have to admit I will swat to kill !

Anyone got any other wasp stories ?

I was just thinking the other day that i haven't seen a single wasp yet this year. I know the bee population is in decline, but are wasps also in decline?

Apparently, yes, they are ...

Sites which have seen a significant increase in arable expansion in the surrounding area lost more species compared with sites that did not ...

Urban areas, with their numerous parks, gardens and churchyards, can supply bees and wasps with a diverse range of food and offer nesting habitats over a longer time period.

they were a menace in NL up to a few days ago. We've had torrential rain since then. It was pretty awful tho, especially for those if us who use fruity smelling hair products which wasps find attractive.
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.

OK, I asked for that!

Still, you may have a point. Wonder if it will sprout growth?

I need to get hold of that Porty and we can both go on one of those experimental weekends where we get paid loads of dosh for trying out stupid things.

Porty would do it for free.

Nooks, surely you see him out and about on your regular visits to Caergybi ?

I see him regularly although I only see him in men's clothes nowadays  :o ;)

The clothes you're least likely to see Porty in are his work clothes :D

You're surely not suggesting that Porty goes to work (or anywhere else) with no clothes on, Shell?  :o

But, in that case, where would he keep his wallet, and the details of his offshore bank account?

On the radio this morning someone was asking that question, and it was suggested that they could be getting in if there is the smallest gap around the frame of the back door.

I'll have to get on my hands and knees and look for such gaps ! When I lived in High Terrace I used to occasionally catch the perishers coming up through the kitchen sink plughole !

(that's the house where I used to race snails in the back yard. Once I removed the shell of a snail to see if it moved any faster...... but no it still looked sluggish)

Hope you manage to find how they get in, uch I hate slugs.
We use to have snail races down the garden path when we were kids in the Newry  ;D

Thanks Nanon, I'll keep you posted  ;)

The thing to do is to get a couple of pet toads, Baz - I'm sure they'd make short work of any slugs deemed superfluous to the needs of the household  ...
